May 28, 2002

Oshawa, Ont. - Three students from the Mechanical Techniques-Precision Machining program continued the long tradition of excellence and success at Durham College, winning two medals and an honourable mention at the 2002 Pre-apprentice Awards competition.

Greg Parker won the gold medal, Jason Gee was awarded the bronze medal and William Ellis received an honourable mention. First place carries a $1,500 award and a tool kit, while the bronze medal includes a $500 prize and a tool kit. Competitors had to produce a machined part to drawing specifications as well as submit a written report on why they wanted to become a mould maker.

"Our students are strong competitors in every event they enter," noted Bev Balenko, vice-president, business & skills development at Durham College. These awards further recognize that our students are among the very best. Congratulations to the students and to the faculty who provided guidance and encouragement."

The Mold Makers Council of the Canadian Plastics Industry Association launched the annual competition to help raise awareness of mould making as a sound and rewarding career choice for students. The winners were announced at the awards dinner in Mississauga on May 23.
