Durham College, York reach nursing degree agreement

January 3, 2001

Oshawa, Ontario - Durham College and York University have reached agreement to offer a collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program.

Under the agreement, Nursing students will spend their first two years at Durham College in Oshawa and their final two years at York's campus in north Toronto. The collaborative BScN will begin in September 2001.

"The collaborative baccalaureate program provides students with the strong clinical skills for which college nursing programs have long been recognized, plus the emphasis on theory and research which are strengths of a BScN," notes Micki Walters, dean of the schools of Health and Human Studies at Durham.

Last spring, the Ontario government announced changes to educational requirements for nurses. As of January 1, 2005, the minimum entry-level requirement for Ontario nurses will be a BScN. Currently, nurses must have a college nursing diploma or a BScN.

Graduates of Durham's three-year Nursing diploma program who want to enhance their credentials may want to pursue a post-diploma BScN through a number of universities including York, Ryerson, Laurentian and Athabasca.
