Oshawa, Ontario - A brand-new bursary program is destined to make an important difference in the lives of students who are in financial need.
The entrance bursaries were created to help Academic Upgrading students at Durham College continue their studies in one of the college's post-secondary or skills programs. Durham offers Academic Upgrading programs in biology, chemistry, communications, computer literacy, mathematics and physics at the college's Oshawa and Uxbridge campuses.
There are six Academic Upgrading entrance bursaries, each equal to the cost of tuition for one year. The bursaries will be automatically renewed for students who maintain a 2.5 grade point average or higher in their post-secondary or skills program. Five of the bursaries are for Oshawa campus students while the sixth bursary is for a student at the Uxbridge campus. Since 1997, Durham has offered entrance bursaries to high school students who enrol in one of its post-secondary programs.
"Education has such a tremendous impact on a person's career success and earning power," says Jeanette Barrett, dean, School of Academic & Career Preparation. "The new bursaries will help more students attain the credentials and skills they need to begin and progress in their chosen careers."
To be eligible for the new bursary, Academic Upgrading students must be in good academic standing, contribute to the college and/or their community, and be in financial need. A selection committee of college staff and faculty will review bursary applications and make a decision by the end of June.
The deadline for applications for the new entrance bursaries is June 15. Anyone wanting more information about bursaries can contact Betty-Anne Blyth at 905-721-3111, ext. 2429 or betty-anne.blyth@durhamc.on.ca.
