Oshawa, Ontario - On Thursday, March 8, Dr. Peter Barnard will speak at Durham College about Canada's bid to host a $12-billion, 30-year project that could make Canada the world centre for fusion energy research and home to hundreds of the world's top fusion energy scientists. If the bid is successful, it will have a major impact on Clarington, which is the proposed Canadian site for a fusion research facility.
The prestigious project has been billed as one of the largest collaborative research and development endeavours in the world. It is expected to bring huge benefits including significant job creation, major foreign investment and substantial technological development.
Dr. Barnard is the founder, chair and CEO of Iter Canada, a non-profit organization that has support from universities, labour, industry and government. The organization's main aim is to have Canada chosen as the host country for fusion energy research and development.
Nuclear fusion holds promise as a global source of inexhaustible, clean and environmentally safe energy that may be able to meet a large share of the world's fast-growing demand.
The one-hour address will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room I-110 of the Willey building at the college's Oshawa campus.
