Durham Graphic Design students take on the big apple

April 26, 2001

Six Durham College Graphic Design students recently enjoyed a rare opportunity to soak up art, design and life in one of the world's top cultural cities.

Highlights of the four-day trip to New York included visits to the world-renowned Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Parsons School of Design, the Fashion Institute Museum and famous landmarks such as Times Square and the World Trade Centre.

"After walking the streets of New York and seeing the most up-to-the-minute commercial designs, we could feel the same passion for architecture and design that our professors had shown in the classroom," said Marijo Corcoran, a first-year Graphic Design student at Durham.

At the century-old Parsons, known throughout the world for teaching students how to maximize their creative potential, Durham students and professors met with the chair of communication design. They discussed graphic design, the school's program and the possibility of setting up a student exchange program.

"Graphic design reflects life as it exists in our present society," said Richard Brown, one of the two Durham professors who accompanied students on the trip. "Gaining life experience is essential for the budding designer to absorb the pulse of the times." Students organized a number of very successful fundraising activities, including a "kiss the cow" event, to help cover the costs of the trip.
