Durham College student awarded major honour

May 4, 2001

Durham College Nursing student Kirsti Kavanagh knows first-hand that higher education pays off.

The Oshawa/Whitby chapter of Soroptimist International chose Kavanagh as the recipient of its 2001 Women's Opportunity Award (WOA). Moreover, Kavanagh was selected over six other candidates to win the WOA honour at the eastern Canada region level. The award carries a prize of $500 Cdn at the local level and $5,000 US at the regional level. Kavanagh's name has advanced to the third and final level, where she is a contender for the $10,000 US award. She will be recognized at the college's board of governors meeting on May 9.

"I was overjoyed to learn that I had won the first award. When I found out about the regional award, I couldn't believe it," said an elated Kavanagh. "I've wanted to be a nurse since childhood, and I'm so grateful to Durham College for giving me the opportunity to realize my dream. The Soroptimist award will definitely help make this goal happen."

Kavanagh lives in Oshawa with her three daughters, aged seven, eight and 12. A tragedy that claimed the life of her husband two years ago spurred her on to enter college which, as she explained, "is helping me create a secure life for my family."

The Women's Opportunity Award is presented annually to a woman who is the sole supporter of her family and who is enrolled in an education or training program to improve her employment status. Three other Durham College students have won the local award, and one of them was also the recipient of the regional award.
