PET grads in big demand

May 7, 2001

Oshawa, Ontario - Before the school year finished, the entire graduating class of Durham College's new Power Engineering Technician program had received full-time job offers from Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The offers are subject to the successful completion of the Power Engineering Technician program.

"I feel very lucky to have this opportunity to be a nuclear plant operator in training at OPG's Pickering site," said Roben Marie Ivens, one of the nine graduates of the program. "I'd like to thank my professors at Durham College for preparing me well."

The two-year program, which OPG and Durham College co-developed, was first offered in August 1999. The program prepares graduates to work as non-licensed nuclear operators at a power plant, in the energy systems maintenance field for organizations such as hospitals, manufacturing plants or shopping centres, or for resource-based industries.

"At OPG, we have been working closely with Durham College and the community towards building a successful partnership. This is the first of many examples of this kind of collaboration," noted Peter Higginbottom, operations manager at OPG's Pickering B nuclear station.
