Four outstanding Durham College graduates have been named Alumni of Distinction: Jennifer Franssen, Judith Grant, Charlotte Hale and Lorelei Hepburn. The award honours Durham College alumni who have excelled in their careers and who have demonstrated their commitment to the college and/or the community.
Jennifer Franssen, who graduated in 1978 with a diploma in Personnel Administration, worked her way up to vice-president of personnel at Cadbury's before resettling in B.C. almost 10 years ago. As a volunteer and through her job, Jennifer dedicates much of her time and energy to helping ensure that many areas in B.C. are prepared to deal with natural disasters such as floods, snow storms and earthquakes.
Judith Grant, a 1997 Law & Security Administration graduate, is a full-time police constable at 41 division in Scarborough. When not at work, Judith devotes countless hours to a range of volunteer activities. These include helping with events and activities at her daughter's school; taking part in the Durham Regional Police Christmas food drive; answering calls and providing support through the Durham Region Distress Centre; and teaching children about street and bicycle safety.
Charlotte Hale, who received her Advertising Administration diploma in 1993, has left an indelible mark on the arts and recreation in Durham Region. While raising three young children on her own, she launched her own photography company and won a number of awards for her work. She also helped set up the Veni Vidi Studio/Gallery in Port Perry, she is a long-time member of the Borelian Theatre Company in Port Perry, and she helped found the Durham Rowing Club.
Lorelei Hepburn, who earned a diploma in Environmental Technology in 1994, is an innovator, educator and true friend of the environment. In a few short years she built her company, The Environmental Factor, into Ontario's largest privately owned chemical- and pesticide-free lawn care provider. Lorelei is the founding director and current communications and education co-ordinator of the Organic Landscaping Alliance. Last year she was nominated for a Woman of Distinction Award from the YWCA of Durham Region.
