Year 2000 Grants put an extra $75,000 in students' hands

May 1, 2000

Oshawa, Ontario - More than 150 Durham College students will be the first recipients of a brand-new college award.

The Year 2000 Grants, each valued at $500, will be presented to the top three first-year students in each of the college's post-secondary programs and who are deemed to be in financial need. The awards will be based on the students' marks in December 2000 and will be distributed in January 2001. Funding for the new grant comes from the college's recent Creating Futures Fundraising campaign, which received wide and generous support from individuals and businesses.

With the new award, Durham students are eligible for a total of approximately $1 million in scholarships, bursaries and grants. Some of these awards are offered by the college itself, while others are sponsored by area businesses, organizations or individual donors.

"The new grants will go a long way to recognize the efforts of our top-achieving students who need financial help," says Margaret Greenley, director of career & employment services. "An emergency or unexpected expense can really strain a student's budget."

Students and others interested in learning more information about the new Year 2000 Grants or other scholarships or bursaries should call the college's student services office at 905-721-3111, extension 2429.
