Business Leadership grads can fast track to a university degree

June 2, 2000

Oshawa, Ontario - Students and graduates of the Business Leadership program have extra reason to smile. A new articulation agreement allows Durham College's Business Leadership graduates to earn a degree from Athabasca University and receive credit for their program.

Graduates of the college's Business Leadership program will receive 54 credits toward the 90 credits needed for a Bachelor of Administration (Post Diploma) degree from Athabasca. The Athabasca degree can be obtained through distance education.

"These days, job candidates with college and university credentials often have the upper hand," says Gary Polonsky, president of Durham College & University Centre. "The newest agreement with Athabasca further expands career horizons for our grads and helps provide more of the college- and university-trained employees organizations need."

"Collaborative efforts like this provide more opportunities for people to continue their studies to the university level by distance education means," says Athabasca University vice president, academic, Alan Davis. "This agreement gives Durham College students and graduates new options for obtaining the university degree they desire."

First offered in 1994 through the college's Business and Industry Development Services (BIDS), the Business Leadership program is designed for working people who want to upgrade their credentials and advance into management. To accommodate shiftworkers and those who work during the day, classes are held in the afternoon and evening. Students can usually complete the Business Leadership program in three to three and a half years.

The college has existing general articulation agreements with Athabasca that allow Durham graduates to fast track to a number of university degrees. The agreements include the university's Bachelor of Administration (Post Diploma), Bachelor of Professional Arts-Communications, Bachelor of Science (Post Diploma), Bachelor of Science-Computer & Information Systems (Post Diploma) and Bachelor of Professional Arts-Criminal Justice degrees. Earlier this spring, the college announced a new program-specific agreement with Athabasca University. This agreement gives graduates of Durham's three-year Nursing program advanced standing toward a post-diploma Bachelor of Nursing degree from Athabasca.

Athabasca University currently serves 20,000 students at a distance from its main campus north of Edmonton, Alberta. The university offers more than 500 courses and 50 programs through distance education at the bachelor, master, certificate, and diploma levels.
