Durham College gets high approval rating from students

March 24, 1999

The latest survey results are in, and students currently enrolled at Durham College overwhelmingly said that their education is providing them with the experience they need to succeed in the workforce.

A clear 94 per cent of students said they were very satisfied, satisfied or neutral about the overall quality of their learning experience at Durham College. In the survey students rated the college on five key areas:

  • facilities and resources;
  • learning experiences of their program;
  • usefulness of their learning experiences outside of work;
  • ability to prepare them for future employment; and
  • quality of student services.

The student satisfaction statistic is one of the key findings from surveys conducted by the college in conjunction with a new, Ontario-wide project to make the province's community colleges more accountable to the people and organizations they serve.

The first set of survey figures were released on March 9 and they dealt with graduate employment, graduates' satisfaction with their education, and the satisfaction level of employers with the Durham grads they hired. Durham College scored well above the college system average with scores in the 90 per cent-plus satisfaction range.

"This project would not have been possible without the tremendous co-operation and dedication of the college system and each college. It also puts some very important information in the hands of prospective students, educators, parents and the general public. For the first time they can see the Durham College student survey college experience through a student's eyes, and use it to assess colleges throughout the province," states Durham College president Gary Polonsky.

"I also want to acknowledge our students. They are outstanding people who not only give us a pat on the back when we do things right, but also provide honest feedback on how we can improve their educational experience. The rating they've given to college facilities and services is a solid endorsement of our highly competent staff and the emphasis they place on serving students," he adds.

The survey numbers released today and two weeks ago will affect the bottom line of every Ontario college. In a few years, a percentage of the government funding each college receives will be linked directly to its success rate. Currently, college funding is based entirely on student numbers.

"I can assure you the survey figures won't sit idle in a filing cabinet," says Mr. Polonsky. "Continuous improvement is one of the core philosophies here at Durham, and we will make sure that the information gets distributed and acted upon throughout the college."
