97.8 per cent of Durham College grads achieve success

August 20, 1999

A total of 97.8 per cent of Durham College's June 1998 graduates achieved success soon after completing their studies.

The 97.8 per cent figure represents the 91.4 per cent of grads who were employed six months or less after completing their studies, plus the 6.4 per cent of grads who pursued further education.

The last time Durham post-secondary grads achieved employment success of 90 per cent or more was in 1990. Every November the college surveys grads from the pervious June to determine their employment status.

"Faculty and staff are thrilled with the news and congratulate each and every graduate," says college president Gary Polonsky. "Our students work extremely hard during and after college. Their success also shows how much employers value the work ethic, attitude and skills our grads represent."

A robust economy and heightened consumer optimism certainly contributed to the very positive climate for graduating students, acknowledges Mr. Polonsky. "Even when the economy performs well, job seekers still must demonstrate they have the knowledge and drive to help employers move forward."

The impressive success of Durham graduates is chronicled in the college's Career & Employment Report, which has just been published. The colourful 20-page report lists employment success rates by college division and program, plus median, high and low salaries. The report also contains helpful articles on the economic outlook locally and nationally, information technology careers, the college's impressive showing in the Key Performance Indicators surveys, and other topics.

The report is a great resource for prospective students and employers, notes Margaret Greenley, director of career & employment services. "Employment statistics and salary levels are very helpful to students trying to decide what program to take. Employers can also find out about the array of employer services we offer, the Career Shop, our highly successful career fairs, and other important information," she says.

The report is being distributed to high schools and businesses. Copies can be obtained by calling the college at (905) 721-3034.
