Durham College and University Centre pays tribute to esteemed Creating Futures donors

October 22, 1999

Durham College and University Centre held a special ceremony yesterday at the Oshawa campus to recognize the thousands of individuals and businesses that contributed to the Creating Futures Fundraising Campaign over the past three years.

The campaign raised nearly $16 million, exceeding its $12-million goal by an amazing 30 per cent. The funds will go toward information technology, infrastructure and equipment, and bursaries for students in financial need.

Terry Hing, chair of the college's board of governors, remembered the circumstances in which Creating Futures was launched. "With many big campaigns under way, we wondered if people had reached a saturation point. But when we tested the waters, we found tremendous support for a Durham College and University Centre campaign. That support just grew and grew, to take us well beyond our initial target."

One of the highlights of the event was the unveiling of the 16-foot-long Donor Recognition Wall. Individual and group donor names appear on the wall and are organized into four categories: Chair's Circle, Cabinet Circle, Family Circle and Colleagues' Circle.

"The generosity and level of commitment in Durham Region never cease to amaze me," said Gary Polonsky, Durham College president. "Every time we raise the bar-no matter how high or for what reason-the community not only meets, but surpasses, our expectations. Current and future students of Durham College and University Centre are extremely thankful for the good will of each and every donor, whether they gave $10 or $1 million."
