Durham College and Melody Homes Aid in the Ice Storm Crisis

January 13, 1998

Durham College staff and students in conjunction with Melody Homes have banned together to help our eastern neighbours devastated by the severe ice storm. Shelters have been set up for victims left with no electricity, heat or water - the very necessities of life.

A special area has been set up at Durham College to collect specific survival supplies of generators, blankets, flashlights, firewood and water. These items will be delivered to Melody Homes in Bowmanville where their trucks and drivers are standing by to transport the materials to Ottawa. Durham College has even sent a group of eighteen Fire Fighting students to assist during the ice storms. As well, Durham College students who are members of the militia, will be joining the rescue effort.

"The Durham College Student Association is appealing to all university and college students on campus to alleviate the pain and suffering inflicted on those affected by the storm of the century," stated Kevin Jones, President, Durham College Student Association.

Saverio Montemarano, President of Melody Homes said, "We are fortunate and we should help. The community response has been simply overwhelming. Our first truck of supplies left yesterday and we have several more on the way."

"We as concerned citizens are doing all we can to help out our fellow Canadians," stated Gary Polonsky, President, Durham College. "We are glad to team up with Melody Homes and collect as many of the survival items as possible."

Anyone wishing to donate, please bring the items to Durham College, 2000 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa by Friday, January 16, at 2:00 pm or Melody Homes Sales Office, Liberty and Freeland Streets, Bowmanville by Sunday, January 18 at 5:00 pm.
