Durham College Continuous Learning held a special ceremony for its first graduating class of Personal Support Worker Certificate program on Friday, February 27, 1998 at 1:30 pm in the Durham College Community Room, Gordon Willey Building, 2000 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa.
Twenty students were awarded their coveted "Personal Support Worker Certificate" after successfully completing seventeen weeks of theory and lab skills at Durham College. In addition, each student completed 180 hours of supervised long-term care practicum as well as 85 hours of preceptored practicum in the community.
"Our high calibre graduating Personal Support Service Workers are in great demand," states Sandra Meader, Program Coordinator, Durham College. "To date, at least two of the Durham Region agencies are encouraging every single graduate to apply."
Personal Support Workers contribute to the quality of the life of individuals who live in long-term care facilities or in their own home. They promote their client's independence, dignity, social, emotional and physical well-being. They are taught to respect and support each client's desire to be healthy and independent.
This new program, approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Training, replaces the Health Care Aide and the Home Support Worker programs. It is designed to make training more accessible, flexible and portable throughout the province. The new standards give workers a broader choice of working in the community or in long-term care facilities.
