Is it any wonder why Durham College maintains one of the highest graduate placement rates in the College system? The Durham College Career and Employment Services team works tirelessly, ensuring no stone is left unturned when it comes to graduates and jobs.
Just before 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 25th, hundreds of graduating students, resumes in hand and dressed for success, lined up outside Durham College Gymnasium door in anticipation of future job prospects. Inside, 57 companies and 140 recruiting representatives were set up and ready to discuss employment opportunities with them and promote their company, products and services.
"We are very pleased with the cross section of employers that chose to participate in our career fair," said Margaret Greenley, Director, Durham College Career and Employment Services. "Our students had an opportunity to network with future employers from a variety of business sectors."
Some of the participating companies included: EDS, Messier-Dowty, Husky Injection Moulding Systems, OPP, the Minacs Group, Ajax and Pickering Hospital, Oshawa Public Utilities Commission, Dylex Limited, Applebee's Neighbourhood Grill & Bar, LGS Group, Exco Engineering, Magna International, Famous Players Theatres, TD and Scotiabank banks, plus insurance and financial services companies such as London Life and Mutual Group.
"It was a very well run career fair," stated Rob Page, Senior Human Resources Representative, Rockwell Automation, Cambridge, Ontario. "Durham College staff and students treated us, the employers, royally. We were able to collect a lot of resumes and meet quite a number of good quality candidates. We are definitely considering hiring at least two or three graduates." Rockwell International is at least $4 billion in size and employs 25,000 employees worldwide. The Canadian operations,located in Cambridge is the Centre of Excellence for large horsepower, medium voltage motor controls. They have worldwide responsibility for design, marketing, manufacturing and field support of medium voltage controls.
Jim Chadwick, Recruiting Manager from LGS Group Inc., North York, Ontario said, "The quality of candidates we met at the Durham College Career Fair was excellent. We met many highly-skilled and professional individuals and will have a challenge selecting future employees from these people. LGS certainly looks forward to participating in this event next year."
Employers were extremely impressed with the organization and professionalism of Durham College staff and students. The employers who participate in the career circuit know whether a career fair is a success or not. Durham College students were confident, prepared, presented themselves well, and asked intelligent questions. All of the employers hope to be invited to next year's career fair!
"We are very pro-active in assisting our students getting that all important first job," said Margaret Greenley. "A career fair such as this provides our graduating students with a chance to interact with employers and find out what jobs are out there. In order to be successful, students have to market themselves.
Zenon Issel, Mechanical Technology graduating student was impressed. "There seems to be a lot of variety in my field. I'm interested in finding out more about five or six employers. Durham College Career and Employment Services have done a great job in organizing this for us. Thank you."
