Province Commits over $5 Million to Expand University Education in Durham

September 4, 1998

Oshawa, Ontario - The Ministry of Education and Training announced today a decision to provide Trent and York universities with over $5 million in operational funding to provide university programming at Durham College.

This investment, to be committed over a four year period, will address several vital issues pertinent to the success of operating the University Centre at Durham. It will enable York and Trent universities to expand programs and course offerings to meet enrollment demands of a growing region. It will also serve as a concrete example of how Ontario's colleges and universities can work closely and successfully together.

"Durham College and all of Durham Region/Port Hope, are appreciative of the Ministry's decision to provide multi-year, operational funding for the Durham University Centre," stated Gary Polonsky, President, Durham College. "This announcement continues the transformation of our already wonderful community in a way that will be felt in years and decades to come. This may also set a new benchmark for college-university partnership in Ontario. A huge 'thank you' to our two wonderful partners, Trent and York universities."

"York University welcomes this funding which will assist us in providing high-quality access to university education for students in the Durham Region. Our students benefit from our partnership with Trent University and Durham College, and we will continue to work to enhance their educational options," said York University President, Dr. Lorna Marsden.

"We welcome this opportunity to extend our partnership with Durham College and York University and with this new investment it will be possible to do so," said Professor Bonnie Patterson, President, Trent University. "Each participant brings a particular strength to the initiative. We are committed to developing partnerships that make sense to our mission and this one builds on our long-standing commitment to provide higher education in the Durham Region."

Three degree programs from Trent and York universities are available at Durham: a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science from Trent and a Bachelor of Administrative Studies from York. The Centre began full-time day-time operations in September of 1996, now serving over 200 full-time and 2,000 part-time students.

This partnership gives three clear choices to students at Durham College's Oshawa Campus: a college diploma from Durham College; a university degree from either Trent or York; or application for entry to a fast track to both a college diploma and a university degree.
