Three Durham College Skills Training Students from the Motor Vehicle Techniques program recently entered into competition against four other Community Colleges from across Ontario in the first post-secondary Canada Robotics Games held on January 10 and 11, 1997 at Centennial College.
The trio won two first place prizes; one for 'The Most Innovative Robot Design', and one for 'The Best Written Documentation'. They were also awarded two second place prizes for 'Engineering Panel Presentation' and 'Best Overall in President's Award'. In total, Durham College's winning team walked away with four of the seven awards.
'We are very proud of the achievements of these three dedicated students and would like to acknowledge their role in helping put the Skills Training Centre into the limelight by winning these prestigious awards', commented Tom Cunningham, one of the students' Professor Mentors.
After receiving the required material, the three contestants, Walid Amer, Jeremy Grady, and Jeremy Killin, built and designed their award winning robot named SHOCKER in only eight weeks. When asked if the 1000 man hours they put into the project was worth the effort, Grady responded 'You bet, I think we would all do it over without even thinking twice about it.' 'We had so much fun. We have searched for other similar competitions in Canada and the United States but haven't had any luck,' commented Amer.
'The contest was a great idea that made learning fun. It wouldn't have been available to us if it wasn't for the support of our professors, Tom Cunningham and Jerry Wood, and our sponsor PLYDEX,' expressed Jeremy Killin.
