Durham College student, Colin Winslow, an Automotive Service Technician apprentice at Durham College's Skills Training Centre in Whitby, placed second at the Ontario Skills Challenge competition, held in Kitchener recently.
Colin was awarded a silver medal in the Automotive Service category of the Ontario Skills Challenge competition. He competed against six other contenders from across the province. In this demanding seven-hour competition, hands-on and diagnostic skills were challenged. Some of the tests included: a written exam; vehicles with built-in problems; component identification; and making and installing steel brakelines. Colin's second place finish at this event automatically qualified him to compete in the Canada-wide competition to be held in Red Deer, Alberta from May 29 to 31, 1997.
"We are very proud of Colin and of all the faculty who were right alongside him. Colin is a wonderful example of the caliber and commitment of our students," said Bev Turner, Vice-President, Business and Skills Development, Durham College.
Other Durham College students to participate in the Ontario Skills Challenge competition included: Brad Chilvers, also in the Auto Service category; Jason C. Kelley, Plumbing; Norm Fraley, Residential Wiring; Brian Waye, Welding; and Donnie Arsenault in the Precision Machining category. All the contestants were judged for their ability to complete the project in the required time, how well they followed instructions, and on the quality of their work. These annual provincial competitions are organized into two levels: secondary school and post-secondary.
"We praise and acknowledge the involvement and achievements of all our students," stated Wayne Precoor, instructor, Automotive Service, Durham College. They put in many long hours and a lot of extra work. It's great to see that kind of dedication rewarded."
