John Snobelen - Minister of Education and Training Guest Speaker at Youth Internship Apprenticeship Student Graduation

The first graduating class of the Youth Internship Apprenticeship Program (YIAP) will be honoured at a special graduation ceremony to be held at Durham College Skills Training Centre, 1610 Champlain Avenue in Whitby. This celebration of success will take place on Thursday, May 29, 1997 at 7:00 p.m.

A total of thirty-eight students will be honoured as they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas . Twenty of those graduates will have completed the basic and intermediate level of in-school training for the General Machinist Apprenticeship Program. The remaining eighteen will have completed the basic and intermediate level of in-school training for the Automotive Service Technician Program.

Prior to the conferring of the diplomas, two guest speakers will address the graduates. The Honourable John Snobelen, Minister of Education and Training, and Patricia Walcott, Director, Human Resources Development Canada.

High school students who were enrolled in the Youth Internship Apprenticeship Program continued with their secondary school education while taking advantage of learning a skilled trade at the same time. During the summer months, they were placed in paid job work placements with local employers.

"The Youth Internship Apprenticeship Program has been a tremendous success," stated Sandy MacDonald, Coordinator. "The integration of secondary school education with community college and on the job work placements has been very beneficial to both students and employers."

Durham College, four school boards - Durham Board of Education, Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Northumberland-Clarington Board of Education, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland Clarington Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Ministry of Education and Training, Human Resources Development Canada, along with two local apprenticeship committees have united to offer today's youth an opportunity of achieving advanced training in skilled trades.
