Durham College Offers New Employment Program

June 4, 1997

The "On The Job Training" Program (OTJ) is a new training initiative offered through Durham College. OJT is funded through the Ministry of Education and Training and is a component of the Career and Employment Preparation Program. Participants will be able to access information, set objective career goals, develop action plans and gain the valuable work experience they need to find and keep jobs. This program plans to place 700 youth and 75 adults in jobs this year.

Employers who participate in the program will also benefit, as a wage subsidy is offered to the employer to help offset the cost of training the OJT participant.

"This program presents a wonderful opportunity for both the participant and the employer," states Jeanette Barrett, Director of Career Development. "The trainee is given a competitive advantage in the job market and the employer is given financial compensation during the negotiated training period."
