Hiring qualified candidates made possible through job fair

February 4, 2005

OSHAWA, Ont. - Hiring an employee who doesn't quite suit a position can cost a company thousands of dollars. It is estimated that about 90 cents from each Human Resources dollar is spent trying to find the right person through a combination of staff time, interviews, testing, or other aspects of a job search. As a result, companies are turning to job fairs.

The 2005 Job Fair at Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is sold out this year, with over 60 companies scheduled to attend including employers from Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia. Thirty-eight per cent of employers are new to the fair, demonstrating the importance of this hiring tool.

"Employers who attend the fair have the ability to meet students and gain a better understanding of how they fit into their company's style," said Tara Blackburn, director of Career + Employment Services. "It provides a first-hand look at what the student has to offer and insight into the skills and experience they possess."

The Durham College and UOIT Job Fair will take place on Wednesday, February 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Gymnasium of the Oshawa campus. For more information on the employers attending the event, visit www.dc-uoit.ca/ces.
