OSHAWA, Ont. - Join students of Durham College, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) and Trent@UOIT as they host representatives from a local branch of the Red Cross who will be on campus to pick up a substantial amount of money.
A cheque for almost $7,400 will be handed over to the Canadian Red Cross from students of all three institutions on Thursday, March 31 at 3 p.m. in the East Atrium of the Science building. The student-initiated drive led by S.H.A.R.E. (Students for Humanitarian and Action through Respect and Education) collected money through different clubs, pub nights, donations, and a campus coin drive in February.
Fundraising was made possible by student groups and volunteers, which incorporated individuals from all program areas at the three institutions. One of the parties most involved in the collection was Student Population United (SPU), a club created to provide social events on campus as a break from the sometimes hectic moments of student life.
"I already wanted the money going to the Red Cross, so this was a perfect opportunity to help out," said Kirk Megna, SPU president. "SPU was also involved in the door-to-door process in residence, as well as manning a booth outside Tim Hortons collecting spare change."
This event was a real success story and just one example of how these students constantly work to raise money for food drives, homelessness, and the less fortunate.
