OSHAWA, Ont. - From May 2 to 4, skilled trades students from the Durham College Whitby campus competed in the 2005 Ontario Technical Skills Competition. Eleven individuals participated in eight different categories, which were held at Rim Park in Kitchener Waterloo.
"We have been competing since the event's inception 16 years ago," said Glenn Coady, a professor at Durham College. "I have been going to this event for a number of years and I feel I can speak for the other coaches as well, in saying it seems every year the competition becomes increasingly more difficult."
Silver medals went to Keith Smiles and Mark Chartrand (precision machining) and Mike Gordon (plumbing). Brian Colley and Mario Benacquista (heating system technician) received a bronze medal for their work, as did James Hamilton and Chris Japp (industrial millwright mechanic). Other competitors included Michael Bond (automotive service technician), Yi-Ling Li "Eyleen" (computer aided manufacturing), Clint Dewar (industrial wiring) and Brett Niemi (electrical wiring).
"Students from Durham College rise to the occasion, showcase their skills and talents and in doing so make us all very proud of their achievements," said Coady. "Congratulations to all the competitors."
