School of Rock 'N' Roll Summer Camp returns to Durham College

June 1, 2005

OSHAWA, Ont. - Rock 'n' roll your way through a week of camp this summer! The Music Business Management program at Durham College together with Long & McQuade Musical Instruments of Oshawa is proud to announce the School of Rock 'N' Roll Summer Camp 2005.

For the second year, youth ages 9 to 14 have the incredible opportunity to "rock out" during four, one-week camp sessions this July. James Fox, who participated in the camp last year said, "This is the funnest camp I've ever been to. I learned everything I need to know to set up a concert. I had lots of fun; it was awesome."

"Rockers" come with varied backgrounds -- from those with no musical experience to accomplished musicians who write their own material. Every rocker is placed in a band with members of similar experience, and they spend the week practising in two jam sessions each day. They also learn about the history of rock, band promotion, stage presence, live sound techniques, and song writing.

"The School of Rock was great fun and I'll remember it for a lifetime," said 12-year-old Rebecca.

Every Friday afternoon, family and friends are invited to the Festival of Rock to watch these future stars perform. Audiences enjoy various musical renditions of old favourites, as well as original songs written by band members during the week. During the festival, camp participants experience a day in the life of a rock star, which includes a radio interview, band photo signing, and sound checks.

"This is a fun time of year when young, aspiring musicians and songwriters alike get to share their love of music with fellow rockers," said Dan Clancy, camp director.

Each rocker receives an official camp T-shirt, an all-access backstage pass, and has a chance to win musical instruments or equipment. Last year, Yamaha Canada provided an electric guitar and Shure provided a microphone for two individuals.

This year, the School of Rock 'N' Roll Summer Camp 2005 is proud to welcome Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Whitby/Oshawa.
