OSHAWA, Ont. - Following the success of the Collaborative Nursing program at Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), the Bachelor of Science Nursing (BScN) program is now available to registered practical nurses (RPN) in Ontario.
"This is a significant announcement for RPNs in Ontario as it provides the opportunity for diploma-prepared RPNs to bridge from a diploma to a BScN degree, recognizing the individual's education and experience," said Jean Jackson, co-ordinator of both the Practical Nursing and Personal Support Worker programs at Durham College.
This program is unique, as it includes small, interactive classes; has a state-of-the-art clinical skills lab; is the only program of its kind in Canada to incorporate laptop learning into all of its classes; and uses a wide variety of hands-on learning.
"Durham College's RPN and PSW (personal support worker) programs and UOIT's Faculty of Health Sciences are quite unique in Ontario as we share common facilities such as a common clinical skills lab; the faculty share office space and also work closely together," she explained. "This provides an exciting opportunity for health educators at Durham College and UOIT to be innovative in the education of nurses in Ontario."
Students who are interested in the program are required to take two bridge courses. Upon successful completion, students can take a program that is full time during the day or part time through a combination of online, weekend and evening modules to suit almost every schedule.
"Most applicants for this bridging opportunity will wish to continue working as RPNs and may not want to return to school full time," said Jackson. "We have offered this BScN bridging program with that flexibility to accommodate their needs."
