OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College is pleased to announce two individuals who will each receive a 2005 Alumnus of Distinction Award at the Durham College convocation ceremonies on June 17. The honorees are Ken Babcock and Chris Bovie.
Ken Babcock is the very accomplished Athletic director at Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). As a 1985 Sports Administration graduate, he oversees the operations of the Campus Athletic Centre, which includes marketing and promotions of the complex, intercollegiate athletics, and summer camps for children. Ken has given back to Durham Region by developing a program for elementary students that encourages them to stay in school, avoid drugs, and develop life skills through athletics. In 2000, he was awarded the Durham Region Sportsman of the Year, and three years later, he was voted the Canadian Colleges Athletic Director of the Year.
Chris Bovie, a 1988 Journalism graduate, is currently the managing editor of the Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington This Week newspapers. He was an award-winning reporter when he joined Metroland in 1993, and since taking the helm as managing editor, his newspapers have continuously been named among the best in Ontario and Canada. Even with a demanding schedule, he mentors youth at the Durham Family Court Clinic; organizes and leads all aspects of the Durham Regional Spelling Bee; and co-ordinates a lecture series in conjunction with UOIT to promote discussion around social issues facing Durham Region.
The Alumnus of Distinction Award recognizes graduates who have excelled in their careers and contributed to the development of the college and/or their communities. Since the award program was launched in 1991, just over 40 alumni have received this honour.
