OSHAWA, Ont. - Eight students at Durham College and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology have been chosen to receive national in-course scholarships awarded by the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation for their active citizenship, engaged leadership, innovative thinking and academic achievement.
More than 1,000 students from over 225 post-secondary institutions will receive the awards to help them complete their studies. The national in-course awards recognize students beginning the upper years of their undergraduate university or college studies who have not yet received a significant merit scholarship.
"We're very proud to see that every nominee from Durham College and UOIT was recognized as a Millennium Scholarship recipient this year. These scholarships provide an opportunity for some of our top in-course students to achieve their educational goals," said Margaret Greenley, vice-president of Student Services at Durham College and UOIT.
Among this year's recipients are Samveg Saxena, a third-year UOIT Manufacturing Engineering student, and Jennifer McCallum, a second-year Durham College Public Relations student, who will each receive $4,000 Millennium Excellence Awards, renewable for a second year and valued at $8,000. The following Durham College students will receive non-renewable $4,000 Millennium Excellence Awards: Ashleigh Jacob, second-year Advertising; Ashley Schofield, second-year Advertising; Kevin Marshall, second-year Biomedical Engineering Technology; Lisa Fernandez, second-year Court and Tribunal Agent/Paralegal; Lori Sinclair, second-year Court and Tribunal Agent/Paralegal; and Julia Young, second-year, Paramedic - Primary Care.
Several thousand students from across Canada apply for these awards. Each participating institution receives a certain number of nominations based on their full-time student population enrolled in eligible programs for the 2005 application year (one award for every 800 students). The renewable awards are determined by an independent selection committee from nominations received from across Canada. The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private, independent organization which distributes $340 million in bursaries and scholarships each year throughout Canada.
