OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College staff were all smiles as they picked up an award for their success in helping youth find jobs over the past year. The Job Connect site at the College's Uxbridge Campus received the 2005 Minister's Award for Excellence in Service Results at this year's Manager's Forum in Toronto, yesterday. The site was recognized by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) as one of the top five Job Connect services in the province.
Funded by the MTCU, Job Connect delivers employment services and support to youth between 16 and 24 years of age. Select services are also available to adults over 25 years of age.
"It is an honour to be recognized as one of the top five Job Connect sites in the province in providing exceptional employment support services to youth," said Kim Lutes-McKay, manager, Community Employment Resource Services, Durham College. "The award recognizes the extremely hard work and dedication of the Job Connect team in addressing some of the challenges that youth face in finding and maintaining employment."
This year, the Uxbridge Job Connect site exceeded objectives which are set on a yearly basis in accordance with MTCU benchmarks. Objectives for the site include the number of young people served and placed; thenumber referred out to other community programs; employability of those who have utilized the program; and addressing the types of barriers that deter young people from getting and maintaining employment. Results are measured by the MTCU through data verification and compliance processes.
A number of other College services supported the Uxbridge Job Connect site in achieving its win including Uxbridge Continuing Education and the Community Employment Resource Centres in Brock and Port Perry.
"With their assistance and shared vision to maintain Durham College's mission of exceptional service and creating opportunities for youth and employers, we were able to exceed our goal to help youth find jobs," added Lutes-McKay.
