OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham College professor Margo Bath is one of a select group of Ontario residents chosen to be a member of the Ontario Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform.
In April 2006, Elections Ontario sent 124,000 letters to randomly selected registered voters asking if they were interested in being part of a group to look at how we elect our provincial politicians in Ontario. Bath and 12,000 other people responded to that letter and, after a series of meetings, one person from each riding was selected to sit on the Citizens' Assembly. Bath represents one of four ridings of Durham Region, the Durham riding, which covers some of Oshawa as well as Clarington.
The Ontario Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform has the responsibility of assessing Ontario's electoral system and others, to recommend whether Ontario should retain its current system or adopt a new one. From September to December 2006, Assembly members are spending six weekends in Toronto learning about electoral systems. In addition, they will consult with fellow Ontarians through a series of public meetings. One of those meetings will be held at the Oshawa campus of Durham College on Tuesday, November 21 in Room C113 of the Gordon Willey building.
The Durham College public consultation meeting will include Assembly members from ridings throughout Durham Region. They include Margo Bath (Durham), Nancy Collins (Oshawa), Raj Roopansingh (Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge) and Ted Savelle (Whitby-Ajax).
Everyone in the community including Durham College and UOIT students interested in electoral reform is invited to attend. Have your voice heard. Be part of history in the making.
