Journalism graduate to be recognized for accessibility advocacy on and off campus
OSHAWA, Ont. - The Durham College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Accessibility Working Group will be joined by members of the campus community this Friday as it presents Durham College Journalism graduate John Draper with the college and university's first annual Accessibility Advocate Award.
Leah Myers, president of Durham College, will present Draper with the award in recognition of his unwavering commitment to promoting accessibility on campus and his incredible support of communities that are accepting of and accessible for persons with disabilities.
Born with cerebral palsy, Draper works with a communications team and special computer software that give him a 'voice' to advocate on behalf of persons with disabilities. It's a voice that is heard loud and clear at the numerous conferences, workshops and educational institutions he attends each year in Ontario and on the west coast.
In addition to the presentation of the Accessibility Advocate Award, attendees will hear from visually-impaired United Church minister and third-grade teacher Sharon Ballantyne, who will recount her challenges with workplace accommodations, and provide insight into her experiences as a post-secondary student.
