Durham College President Leah Myers was on hand November 9 to congratulate Tracey Pounder and other members of this year's talented group of Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation Excellence Award recipients.

Seven Durham College students have earned Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation awards for their outstanding leadership and success in the classroom and community.

The Millennium Excellence Award Program recognizes the student leaders of today and tomorrow and emphasizes the importance of supporting their contributions to Canada's future.

"What a proud time this is for Durham College. To have seven of our students honoured with these prestigious scholarships is so very reflective of the outstanding academic and community leaders here on our campus," said Margaret Greenley, vice-president of Student Affairs at Durham College. "All of our scholarship recipients deserve congratulations for their commitment to their studies, their communities and for displaying leadership on a regular basis."

The students gathered together November 9 in the Community Room, shared their experiences and received congratulations from Durham College President Leah Myers. She noted a wonderful variety of pathways had brought the award recipients to Durham College, including one student who had earned a university degree previously and another who was embarking on a second career after raising a family.

Six students received in-course awards, which honour good citizenship and demonstrated community service, academic achievement, leadership, and an interest in innovation. The list of community service is extensive, including one student who's made an immeasurable difference in a child's confidence and self-esteem while working through Kinark Child Services. Another student is a peer tutor at Durham College, another volunteers at an elementary school, and the group includes a volunteer Catholic youth minister.

Receiving one-time scholarships valued at $4,000 were Karen Beharrell, second-year Paramedic studies, Jeffrey Cremasco, second-year Power Engineering Technician studies, Stephen Hutchinson, second-year Business Administration, Operations Management studies, Robert Lakics, second-year Police Foundations studies, Tracey Pounder, second-year Public Relations studies, and Faustino Tuccia, second-year Motive Power Technician - Service and Management studies.

College students are required to complete one year of studies before applying for the in-course scholarships.

Alexandra Kolar, in first-year Advertising studies, received a one-time Entrance Scholarship valued at $4,000. These scholarships are given to students beginning their first year of full-time undergraduate studies leading to a degree, diploma or certificate.

Since 2000, the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has delivered more than 500,000 bursaries and scholarships worth more than $1.5 billion to students across Canada.
