OSHAWA, Ont. - Co-ordinators of this year's Summer Shorts Sound Design program at Durham College have teamed with the Port Perry Young People's Theatre Company to provide participants with an exciting opportunity to design the sound for an upcoming production.
The Sound Design program is available to youth ages 13 and older and runs from August 14 to 18. In addition to learning about sound design for television and theatre, this year's participants will have an exciting hands-on opportunity to design the sound stage for the theatre's upcoming production of ON STAGE NOW!, which premieres on September 16 at the Port Perry Town Hall 1873 Theatre. The Young People's Theatre Company was formed to provide a summer theatre experience to a wide-variety of young talent in Durham Region and beyond.
"The Summer Shorts program is designed to provide participants with a fun and creative learning experience in a state-of-the-art setting," said Charlotte Hale, co-ordinator of the program. "This year's unique opportunity to partner with the theatre will benefit participants and the community at large."
Robert Hanson, a sound professional with Folkes Hanson Productions Inc., is leading this year's Summer Shorts Sound Design program. His television and theatre credits include productions featuring the talent of the late Jim Henson, and Al Waxman. Hanson is also the executive producer of the Whitby Courthouse Theatre and is actively involved in local productions.
"We are very excited to have Robert Hanson join Summer Shorts this year. He brings extensive knowledge and experience to the program, and will help provide a new element of experience to this year's participants," added Hale.
"I'm honoured to work with the next generation of sound designers through this unique partnership opportunity," said Hanson. "My hope is that the participants will get involved in sound roles for future community productions like those at the Whitby Courthouse Theatre."
Spaces may still be available for this year's Summer Shorts Sound Design program which runs from August 14 to 18 at Durham College. For more information, visit
